How We Got Here: Georgia's Maternal Mortality Crisisby Jess Mador 4/29/24. "It comes back to access to health care and prenatal care and early care, perinatal care. When it comes to pre-birth post-birth, it comes to better health care for women across Georgia,” said Decatur Democratic State Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, who serves on the House Public Health Committee. “Poor women, rural women, African-American women do not have the access to medical care that we need with Georgia.” Oliver is among a coalition of state Democratic lawmakers continuing to push a proposal for full Medicaid expansion in Georgia, which stalled during the last legislative session." I am wishing all the Emory graduates a happy commencement and congratulations on your achievement. I hope your families can be with you for a meaningful and positive celebration.
As you all know, Emory and many other universities across the country have suffered from protests, vandalism, and enormous stress and tension over legitimate free-speech issues and undisputed illegal acts of vandalism. Emory is no exception, and based on the video of APD and Georgia State Patrol, I wrote a public letter to President Fenves that was published by the AJC on the improper physical conflicts and arrests of 23 students and faculty on April 25.
Read the full letter in the AJC here.
I live less than one block from the Emory campus, and this past week antisemitic materials were leafleted on my street and several streets surrounding my house. The hate filled messages targeting Jews are getting closer and closer, and I know we are all very sad for the unimaginable pain this causes our Jewish neighbors. Many of us have cameras on our homes for security, and I urge you to look at your camera film and possibly Identify individuals that may be responsible for these terrible acts. Please stay safe, and look out for your neighbor.
